A Simple Tool to Help Teens and Young Adults Become Mindful and Empowered. 

One of the most important skills you can learn and practice every day is checking-in with yourself and noticing, this is how wire your brain for mindfulness.  This is also one of the very first things that we teach our Teens and Young Adults as they are beginning their exciting journey towards their meaningful goals.  

Why is checking-in and noticing so important?

Quite simply, it's one of the best ways to bring your awareness back to the present where you can see things so much more clearly. We call it a "check-in" or a soft pause in your day to regroup, realign, and refocus. A young adult is experiencing so many thoughts, feelings, and emotions every single minute of the day, but very rarely understand the control and effect that they have on them. The goal of the "check-in" is to get back some control, disconnect from some of the forces holding them back, and help them move forward in a positive direction. 

What is there to notice in each moment?

More than you can imagine, and so much that can help you in so many different ways! For example, just by noticing things like your thoughts, feelings, emotions, self-talk, and distractions, you are able to see them, observe them, learn from them, and most important disconnect from them. When you notice your thoughts they can no longer hook you, hurt you, and control you. That disconnection helps to put you right where you need to be to make different choices that move you forward. Just by becoming present and in the moment, you are able to connect with that deeper part of yourself who can see situations more objectively so you can make more empowering choices! 

What types of things can help me move forward?

When you pause and connect with important things like your meaningful goals, values, passions, and yes your Purpose, you are aligning with the very things that help you make these empowering choices, move you forward, and help you understand the importance of becoming and acting from that best version of yourself, who is going to show-up motivated, confident, and laser focused on what's important. 

How do I get started?

Typically the first thing that we have our clients do is to practice checking-in with themselves several times throughout the day. When they do, we have them ground themselves using a client favorite breathing technique, and then we have them get curious, and begin noticing what's showing up for them in that moment, what they're thinking about, how they're feeling, where they are, who they're with, and what they're doing in that moment. Each time they do this, they are building a ritual out of becoming more mindful and present, they are learning something new about themselves, and they are practicing making different choices that are aligned with their values and goals - taking one small step forward. As we always say, that one small step can make all of the difference in the world towards creating a lifetime of change.
