I can hardly believe December is almost upon us! The season is truly in full swing already and I love this time of the year! My daughter will be 13 in January, and my son is 17 now. I'm not sure about you parents, but as I've started my Christmas shopping this year, walking through the toy departments, arts and crafts, and games sections of the stores, I'm feeling so nostalgic about their childhood Christmas's and the magical joy and surprise that came with those Christmas mornings! Don't get me wrong, we all still LOVE this season, and I still adore shopping for my kids, though now I get very specific lists of exactly what they want, and that's where a bit of the magic feels lost. 

As their gift lists have changed in recent years, and I love seeing their smiling faces when they open what they asked for, I always add in a couple very special and personal gifts that have more to do with their futures and personal growth, with deeper meaning and purpose.

Something I've been working on the last couple years with my 17 year-old son is embracing the fact that what's best for him, his future, and our relationship isn't always exactly what he wants in the moment, and that he won't always appreciate now the things that will help him create an incredible future! Our teens and young adults are wired for instant gratification, they simply don't have the brain development yet to always understand what's best for them in the long run, and that's why parenting can be such a struggle at this stage. They want what they want and we happen to know what's best for them - this is where the constant battle comes in to play. 

So we try to find a balance and pick our battles with them! I find The Holiday Season a perfect time to introduce something new. With the excitement and magic in the air, with breaks from school and sports, our kids are more relaxed and open to different ideas, conversations, and even gifts that will change their lives, especially their futures:)
